Family Trip 2026

This is my 5th visit to Japan. (So far I've been abroad 6 times. I live in Taiwan :3) This one really impressed me. I tasted some sai kou (最高) foods. I got myself a used tamagotchi to add a bit of fun to my free time. And I brought a super cute plushie home!

We took a red-eye flight to Centrair Airport this time, and we were curious about the Nagoya-style morning service, so our first stop was Komeda's Coffee at the airport. You get free toast/bread by ordering any drink before 11 am there. I'd looked up some information about this cafe before the trip, and I decided to try one of the 「コメダ裏技」(Komeda's hacks). I ordered ジェリコ (Jelyco) which has whipped cream on top and chose buttered toast with sweet red bean paste. Then I spread the red bean paste and the cream on the buttered toast... Oh my, the toast just tasted amazing, and so did the drink! I highly recommend it! The only thing you need to keep in mind for your first visit to Komeda is to make sure your stomach is empty and not order too much food. You'll understand. :3

Our lodging in Nagoya was located at Osu (大須) Shopping District. I knew that there was a Suruga-ya (駿河屋), where you can find second-hand hobby merch, just a 5-minute walk away. So I planned to buy a used toy there on a smaller budget to add more fun to my trip. I guessed that because Osu Shopping District is one of the three iconic electric towns in Japan, I would have more choices at this branch. I finally picked up a tamagotchi gen1 with a Tama Cafe shell. I'd already checked what's in stock at this Suruga-ya branch on its website, so I just went there to find that specific item, have the staff check if it works well for me, and then get it. Very convenient. The price of the cafe tamagotchi gen1 was higher than what I saw on the website. According to the date on the price sticker, I thought the one I got was a new arrival which hadn't been updated online. But I was happy about that, because it looked very new and I could fully enjoy the beautiful shell. (☌ᴗ☌)

The Tama Cafe shell is my favorite design. It seemed out of stock in Taiwan. God bless that I could get it in Japan so easily.

I finally successfully bred a tamagotchi into a tamatchi after I got back home.
Here're some notes from my experience for potential new tamagotchi owners to check:

If you want to mute the tamagotchi (the beep is crazy loud...), press A till you also press C. Make sure you do this on the main screen. (pressing B switches between the main screen and the time screen) And try to press A to check if you can still hear the beep. If not, you've successfully muted it. But keep in mind that missing a beep for 15 min will be recorded as a mistake.
Turning off the light can both save a bit of battery and let your pet get proper rest.
I personally keep the sound on all the time except when quiet is needed, but mute it before playing a game with the tamagotchi — the sound is BLASTING. (same when disciplining)

My first tamatchi grew into a ginjirotchi! It's cute! Maybe I like ginjirotchi more than mametchi. :3

Compared to castles and temples, I appreciate Japan's anime culture more. Luckily we visited Nagoya this time, so we could spend a day visiting Ghibli Park, which is also in Aichi. For fear that we couldn't freely schedule when to visit, I booked tickets two months before our trip. I booked them on the first day the tickets became available even though we chose O-Sanpo Day Pass Standard, which wouldn't sell out that fast.

I'm not a photo person, so taking beautiful pictures didn't really satisfy me, but I still enjoyed the scenery in Ghibli Park. The real buildings, items whose prototypes you've seen in the films... They're just so beautiful. However, the newly opened Panorama Box Exhibition was truly what amazed me. Photography was prohibited there, but I'd say you can only witness the wonder of these masterpieces by standing there and peering into the boxes to explore them. By the way, I also really liked the short film screened at the Cinema Orion inside the Grand Warehouse. What was screened that day was also a film newly released this past July, A Night in the Valley of Witches (魔女の谷の夜). If you're interested in this film, I'd still highly recommend watching/reviewing as many of Studio Ghibli's films as possible before your visit, because the film is just about this Ghibli Park. And you can get the most out of it by having some background knowledge.

This cool puppy just walked into my life. (ˊᗜˋ*)

Thanks to the Internet. I accidentally saw this bag online while I was searching for info on Ghibli Park. Then I finally confirmed the price of this merch via a Japanese video. (¥4400) And I've now also confirmed its name on the price tag, ヒンのジヨルダーポーチ (heen's shoulder pouch). I think I'm a rather frugal person. I don't shop impulsively unless I really, really like something. And I tend not to spend too much money on luxuries. (a plushie is already a kind of luxury by my definition) But I believe I should buy it. (I'm proud that I did!) I'd say it could be the best plushie design I've ever seen. The high-quality fabric, the magical eyes that show different facial expressions in different angles, perfect chibi size... If you loosen the cord lock around its neck, you can fit a mini umbrella in its stomach. (or feed it snacks? :>) So I really enjoy "walking the heen" whenever I go outside. It works for me — I walk for it too. And it's so cute!

I still feel healed whenever I see my teddy (even just looking at photos of it!). Taking the heen everywhere during my trip made me feel siawase (幸せ) too.

We went to Atami together. While we were waiting for the fireworks, my first tamagotchi died. x.x
(I took the photo with my iPhone, so the fireworks didn't look crisp. I simply edited it to make heen clearer.)

We also visited Mt. Omuro, but I didn't risk my phone, so no heen_taking_chairlift.webp, no heen_climbing_mt_omuro.webp. It was really sunny and super windy on the mountain! A place to test your umbrella! :)

If you're not vegetarian and you're planning to visit Shizuoka, please schedule a meal at Sawayaka. Their beef hamburger steak is the best food I've ever had in Japan. It might become your favorite too, so I don't want you to miss it. It's only served in Shizuoka. If you don't have a car to take you there, taking a bus also works.

This time we went to Sawayaka Fujinishiki (富士錦) Store from the bus stop at Fuji Station. I don't know when the construction around the original stop will finish, but Google Maps won't inform you about the alternate stop — you need to find the indicator to figure it out. You could see the alternate stop across the road on the right side after you walk out of the north exit of Fuji Station as I remembered(?) And you just wait at 2番, take Fujikyu Shizuoka Bus (富士急靜岡バス) which will stop at Aoshima-cho (青島町), and walk from Aoshima-cho stop for about 10 min to arrive at the restaurant. Don't forget to use Sawayaka's ticketing system on the Line MINI app, or you'll spend extra time waiting in line.

We visited for dinner, and Fujikyu Shizuoka Bus had already stopped running by the time we left the restaurant. So we switched to take Gakunan Electric Train (岳南電車), and then transferred to JR. I guess the Jatco-Mae Station (ジヤトコ前駅) is a small station — we didn't see any other people get on the train with us. But we did successfully get to Yoshiwara (吉原) Station, so don't worry. You may need to wait a bit. (We took the train between 8 and 9)

I hope the notes for getting to Sawayaka from Fuji Station have no mistakes. I really want to try that oishii (美味しい) hamburger steak again, so this note is also for myself. :p

What I would like to visit again in Shizuoka are Sawayaka and the very cozy guesthouse I stayed at in Fuji. (I will order おにぎりハンバーグ again!) As for Aichi, I think I would love to visit Ghibli Park in a few years. I wish Studio Ghibli could present more beautiful things to blow our minds again! ☆★

It's my first time writing travel notes. I took notes on transportation methods and food before the trip, and I also recorded my feelings after the trip. (My older brother plans and leads our family trip every time! He fully displays the bearing of the firstborn, in almost all aspects.) And I finally realized that these are also a vital part of a complete trip. Because I think. Thinking fills me with a sense of fulfillment. I used to think going out was a boring activity. People just go to places they've already seen in photos. But now I've started to feel the fun of exploring uncertainty. When leaving for somewhere you're not familiar with, you not only need to search for info online, but also need to verify it once you're actually there. That's a chance to refresh and stimulate our minds, away from the media that's always at our fingertips. I do need those chances.

And maybe I can try to learn Japanese when I have time. It should make my trip to Japan way more interesting! However, I think it's a good idea to improve my English first... (ーー;)

Mint Mint Water

I love mint water. It rekindled my interest in growing plants.

Two weeks ago, I don't know why but there was swelling in the gum under one of my teeth. I told my mom about this, and she invited me to try the mint water which is made from the mint she grew. And OMG, I totally fell in love with it! (ˊᗜˋ*)

Ever since I was little, I've mostly only drunk soy milk and milk, and I've rarely had tea. I have had some herbal tea before, but I just felt so-so about it. So it's really surprising that I'm so fascinated with mint water this time. Though I guess I've drunk mint water before — like the restaurant I visited with my family last weekend also served mint water — the flavor was too faint. I could barely taste that distinctive minty aroma. That might be the case for almost all the mint water I've tried.

I did some research on mint online and found that some people are allergic to the menthol it contains. However, I only drink about 250ml of mint water a day at most, and I haven't noticed any allergy symptoms so far, so I can keep enjoying this drink. :3
(btw, coconut water is another drink I absolutely love, and it's even the most recommended drink to have during the final bowel-cleansing stage before a colonoscopy. I'm so lucky!)

Because of my love for mint water, I started to imagine what if I also plant mint and "mint" mint water anytime...

I used to plant pothos in the office. I'm only brave enough to tackle plants slightly harder than devil's ivy. Mint feels like a good test. And luckily, my mom is good at planting, so she just propagated her healthy mint by layering. The mint mama will accompany the mint kid until it's strong enough to fend for itself. (☌ᴗ☌)八(•ᴗ•)

Hedi's Planting Mint Checklist:

Grow in part-shaded spot (I'm in Taiwan, in subtropical zone)
Grow in a container to prevent it from spreading (We use terracotta with holes)

Daily Care for Mint:

Keep the mint hydrated, but never overwater it
Feed sparingly to keep basic nutrition in potting soil
Frequent pinching back helps the mint bushy while delaying flowering
Watch out for snails or slugs 🐌
Repot and prune when it's necessary

Our mint water is just pure mint and water without any sugar. We cherish the mint leaves, we always re-steep it for three times. So I can steadily mint mint water, get some magic from the mint in my daily life.

And I also planted plots of mint outside my digital room. I have superpower there, so the mint are all ready to be harvested by default. Though there's magic in this digital room, it still takes 5 min for mint to be served again.

As for the issue with my tooth, there's actually a slow-developing cavity that can only be detected via x-ray. I told the dentist that some of my teeth were also damaged in the car accident years ago. (I lost many teeth in that accident) And the tooth with a cavity in the x-ray is one of them, but neither the dentists nor I noticed the damage to the part of the tooth that was under the gum.

It was rather a rare case that dental interns were gathered in my treatment room. The dentists discussed and told me they might try to extract my tooth to do the filling, then replant it. (I guess it's so-called Intentional Replantation?) I don't feel scared about the coming treatment, but I really wish the cavity wasn't caused by my bad habit. One time, I tried using a fork to get the enoki mushrooms out from between my teeth... I felt so annoyed at that moment...(ಠ_ಠ) Of course I never did that again, and I actually didn't try hard that time.

Whether it was caused by the car accident or my dangerous action, it is what it is. What I need to do is to be more and more careful. The human body has strong self-healing ability, but it's also very fragile.

As a coding newbie, it took me around a year to officially ru cuo (入厝). It's only a small room, but it's big enough to hold my soul. I mean, it's really exciting.

Last summer, I happened to visit elle's homepage , and I noticed the cool cursor party on her page. While emailing with elle, I told her that I wanted to customize my own cursor party. That's literally the start of my journey to build my own space on the internet.

The Room

So, this is how my homepage, my digital room looks like at this moment:

There's a chair to sit on, a table where I can work on my laptop, a bed to lie down and sleep in, and an anywhere door that can teleport me to friends' homepages. (it hasn't been initialized .w.) My teddy is also there living with me. And we love to watch the wassie cursors (you and me!) running around the room!≡≡≡ ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

This job was not easy.
But I just started small, step by step.
And I used ai to get the code I needed for my idea, then put most of my effort into programming. (For me, I would like to have a place to sleep first (my room), and then study and learn if possible. : )

Cursor Party

This is my first time trying to connect a static page to a backend server. I even had no idea why I didn't have to push my edits to github at the beginning... (now I know it just directly ships to partykit server as package.json tells us.)

And thanks to elle's share ^[1], I also directly use PGP key as the way to verify domain ownership for cursor party chat according to her building experience. By the way, I also luckily learned how to simply create and use custom email (hi@h80h.xyz) via gmail for free while I tried to verify my domain on elle's cursor chat.

In the months after setting up my own cursor party, I practiced drawing pixel art, I made a community tool for a game as my first project which taught me many of the basics of making website. (The projects I made will be listed on the wall of my room.)

And finally I came back to build the blog for my homepage. The key motivation is that I want to share my thoughts in my own way instead of being limited by the framework of platforms.

Obsidian + 11ty => The Blog

This combo just fulfills my wish of managing my random notes and posts in the same place effortlessly. With 11ty, a folder of source of my blog can simply live under my homepage repo, and then it can output my blog under the /blog folder as I like, which is convenient. It took me some time to arrange the whole structure, so that my custom blog CMS can be flexible, and it was totally worth it.

And of course, I spent more time on designing the look of my blog. I want it to represent me. Besides the teddy "read more" link, I'm most proud of the falling maple leaves. It adds a lil warmth into my blue color base blog and brings some fun with the sweeping function. I directly use the maple leaf emoji to make it. It's just very beautiful and has the best performance since it is Unicode.

If you've seen leaves falling down to this section, it means that you've already been staying here for a while, thanks for your reading. : )

By the way, I'm very satisfied with my own code playground on my blog. Instead of embedding codepen and causing high memory usage, I assemble three ace editors (for html, css and js) and an iframe for previewing, turning them into a codepen-like playground. By doing so, I can safely attach many code showcases in one post but keep it as lightweight as possible.

To be honest, I'm not really an internet person even though I stick to my computer for most of my waking hours. Like I said in the letter to my reader, I'm an HSP. I did find that I tend to focus on only a few things at a time. So I really haven't visited many personal website so far because I didn't leave much spare time in my days.

But Luckily again, there are many people who worship the vibe of personal websites and build communities with friendly guides. The Ideas for Your Personal Website article from 32-Bit Cafe is just a good reference for me. After finishing the post I'm writing now, Interacting with Other Websites will be my next step. (I decided to explore and shape my soul into my website first before making like-minded friends, and I mean... it was truly a long journey, haha...◖⚆ᴥ⚆◗)

My First 8 Direction Character + Room Builder => The Room

A personal room means a lot in my life; it protects self-identity and personal boundaries. Even though the environment of my room sometimes makes me uncomfortable, it's just the safe haven of my mind. Therefore, my homepage must be my room.

I definitely need some tool to help me build my digital room. I found this repo and made myself a room builder to get a schema for my isometric room. And I used habbo avatar imaging API to get template for character posing and actions. Even with the template as reference, it still took me days to develop my own style. Still, the good news is that I have my own character template now. :D

I love that my room ends up looking like an interactive watercolor picture book, even though all the images drawn on canvas are actually pixel-perfect. It reminds me of my favorite children's television series, Wibbly Pig. I guess it's the muted tone I choose and the outline of the objects that bring a similar style feeling.

What can make this room special should be the hugging teddy action. it's more complex, non-reusable, so we don't see this kind of action in habbo, I guess. But since my script is only for my room, I can do whatever I want! As for what I can prepare for people who got lost in my room (How??? :o), it's the void room with a wordle floor. No matter if you guess the word or not, you'll be routed to safety after five tries. And I only use simple encoding for the words, just so you know.

So this is a quick review of how I built myself a cozy space on the internet. This room is the start of my brand-new internet life. I hope I can experience more exciting moments while building something interesting in the future.

Taruchi Trait Index & Playground

Last weekend, I spent some time exploring a game called Asphodel: Prologue. Then, I built trait index for the cute creatures in that world, named Taruchi. I'll also share the tiny, fun playground for taruchi in this post.

Asphodel is an immortal on-chain world that lives on Ethereum.^[1] Asphodel: Prologue is an onchain autobattler, where Taruchi battle in the arena in order to Ascend. It is an introduction to the world of Asphodel.^[2] And now it's in its playtest phase (originally scheduled for 1 week, but now extended for an extra week). This means you can play it for free, but you might need to learn how to use a crypto wallet first.

I always appreciated the nostalgic pixel art in the games that Asphodel Studio produced, like my favorite game Kamigotchi. I also made my first community tool, a kamigotchi index, for it. Now that I can freely browse taruchi by rerolling without worrying about the cost during the playtest, I want to become one of the big fans who checks and indexes all the traits of taruchi. :3

A Letter To My Readers

Hi, this is hedi.

Thank you for reading this pinned post. It's a letter for you, a random letter for someone at somewhere. I'm going to tell you a story about me.

I'm a highly sensitive person, which gave me a relatively unhappy childhood. Even though I always tried my best to live a better life, I just couldn't help feeling frustrated a lot of the time. However, this personality and these experiences make me detail-oriented, so I can clarify my thoughts more easily, and sometimes can understand others a little bit better. Basically, I appreciate those people who respect themselves and others; conversely, I keep my distance from those who are impossible to communicate with.

So why did I start building my own website?

Because I want to talk about myself in my cozy space.
I want to find friends who have similar thoughts.

In the past, I didn't really find long-lasting friendship in school and the workplace, mostly because I wasn't doing the things I enjoy there. English isn't my native language, I don't have an "I built my website from scratch when I was ten" childhood. The information gap was real (even within the same town). My world was so small.

Fortunately, I don't easily yield to fate, and I haven't stopped exploring the world via the internet. I stay true to my beliefs without forgetting to care about the people around me. I know I'm not the strongest, so I only ask myself to live a life with no regrets.

I found happiness while writing, making arts and building websites. I enjoy the moments that define what beauty means to me, and I'll put most my efforts into this. Even though I'm just an ordinary person, I'll still try to write myself a cool story.
